Gurgaon's GMDA Implements 30-Day Road Closure for Critical Drainage Infrastructure

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has issued a significant traffic advisory announcing the temporary closure of the master road dividing sectors 75 and 76. This closure will be in effect for the next 30 days to facilitate essential drainage crossing work for the under-construction leg-IV master stormwater drain project.

Infrastructure Project Aims to Address Chronic Waterlogging

The ongoing drainage work being executed by GMDA represents a crucial infrastructure initiative designed to tackle persistent waterlogging issues along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and its adjoining sectors. With vehicular movement at the Sector 75–76 junction now completely halted, the authority has established comprehensive alternative routing to minimize commuter disruption.

Detailed alternative route instructions have been provided:

  • Vehicles approaching from Vatika Chowk should continue on SPR towards NH-48 and utilize the cloverleaf loop near the Kherki Daula toll plaza to reach their destinations.
  • Commuters traveling from the Dwarka Expressway towards sectors 74 to 80 have been directed to take NH-48 and use the same loop system.
  • Traffic originating from Rajiv Chowk is advised to remain on NH-48, proceed beyond Kherki Daula, and then take appropriate turns.
  • Vehicles coming from Pachgaon Chowk and Manesar have been instructed to execute a U-turn near the toll plaza to access internal sector roads.

A GMDA official emphasized, "Commuters are strongly advised to avoid the Sector 75–76 crossing entirely. For smoother traffic flow, please use alternative routes via Darbaripur Road and the Sector 76–77 dividing road."

Project Specifications and Historical Context

The 4.6-kilometer reinforced cement concrete (RCC) box drain is being constructed along the SPR corridor specifically to combat recurring flooding in the newly developed sectors adjacent to this vital roadway. SPR, which connects Golf Course Extension Road to NH-48, has historically been one of the most flood-prone stretches during the monsoon season. Factors such as rapid urbanisation, the loss of natural drainage channels, and various encroachments have contributed to frequent waterlogging in low-lying areas, resulting in severe traffic snarls.

Once operational, this new drain is expected to efficiently channelise rainwater from sectors 68 to 80, significantly reducing the hydraulic load on the overburdened Badshapur drain, which frequently overflows during periods of heavy rainfall. Key arterial roads including Sohna Road, SPR, and Golf Course Extension Road are anticipated to experience markedly improved stormwater outflow capacity.

The Badshapur drain is one of Gurgaon's three primary stormwater channels, responsible for carrying runoff from nearly 24,100 hectares between Ghata village and the Najafgarh drain. To alleviate this substantial burden, the leg-IV drain was conceptualized as an additional outlet. It branches from the Badshapur drain near Vatika Chowk on Sohna Road and runs parallel to the SPR up to NH-48.

Project Timeline and Current Status

The project received formal approval during GMDA's fourth authority meeting in May 2019. However, its execution faced considerable delays, with the tender being floated nearly three years later. The construction contract was eventually awarded in April 2023, with an initial completion deadline set for October 2024. Officials are now actively working to expedite the project with the aim of finalizing construction before the onset of the monsoon season in June, ensuring the new drainage system is functional when it is needed most.
