Gurgaon's Crucial Water Boosting Station Faces Yet Another Delay
The much-anticipated commissioning of the Sector 72 water boosting station in Gurgaon has been postponed once more, with authorities now projecting a mid-April completion date instead of the earlier March target. This marks the latest in a series of setbacks for a project that has been in development since 2019.
Project Details and Current Status
According to GMDA officials, approximately 40 meters of pipeline laying remains incomplete out of the planned 985-meter connection between the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant and the Sector 72 boosting station. "Most of the work is already done, and the clearing of the already laid pipelines is underway. Efforts are being made to operationalise the boosting station by mid-April," confirmed a GMDA representative.
The station, which spans 4 acres with an estimated cost of Rs 63 crore, represents a critical infrastructure investment for Gurgaon's growing residential areas.
Impact on Residents and Water Supply
This delay directly affects residents in new sectors along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), many of whom experience irregular water supply. Currently, these areas depend on the Sector 51 boosting station, which struggles to meet peak demand, forcing numerous residential societies to rely on expensive private water tankers.
Jaswant Rao, RWA president of BPTP Astaire Gardens, expressed frustration: "Despite repeated complaints, we continue to face erratic water supply, especially in summer, and heavily depend on tankers. Timely completion of this project will provide relief to the residents."
Once operational, the 240 MLD Sector 72 facility is expected to significantly ease pressure on the existing system and improve water distribution across multiple SPR sectors.
History of Delays and Challenges
The project's troubled timeline includes:
- Initial Foundation (June 2019): The foundation was laid with a nine-month completion target
- Pandemic Impact: Work slowed significantly during COVID-19 restrictions
- Construction Bans: Annual construction bans across the NCR further delayed progress
- Land Availability Issues: The unavailability of land for a 500-meter pipeline stretch created major obstacles
- Dwarka Expressway Complications: NHAI halted pipeline work beneath the expressway after detecting cavities, causing a two-month stoppage
GMDA attempted to work around the land issue by revising the alignment and laying approximately 650 meters of pipeline between Fazilpur Road and Sector 71. Work beneath the Dwarka Expressway resumed in December after receiving necessary clearances.
Broader Context and Future Implications
While construction of the station structure was completed in 2022, the second phase involving machinery installation began in February of that year with a twelve-month deadline. The repeated delays highlight the complex challenges facing urban infrastructure development in rapidly growing cities like Gurgaon.
The successful commissioning of this boosting station represents more than just improved water supply—it symbolizes progress in addressing long-standing civic issues that affect thousands of residents daily. As Gurgaon continues to expand, such infrastructure projects become increasingly vital for sustainable urban development and quality of life.
