Gurugram Deploys QRTs to Combat Waterlogging

The Gurugram district administration has taken a proactive step to address the perennial problem of waterlogging by deploying Quick Response Teams (QRTs) across the city. These teams are tasked with ensuring swift action during the monsoon season to prevent flooding and minimize inconvenience to residents.

Formation and Deployment

The QRTs have been formed under the supervision of the deputy commissioner and include officials from the municipal corporation, public works department, and irrigation department. Each team is equipped with necessary tools and machinery, including pumps and suction machines, to handle water accumulation effectively. The teams are stationed at strategic locations identified as vulnerable to waterlogging, such as underpasses, low-lying areas, and major roads.

24/7 Monitoring and Response

A control room has been set up to monitor weather conditions and waterlogging reports round the clock. Residents can call a dedicated helpline number to report waterlogging incidents. The QRTs are expected to reach the spot within 30 minutes of receiving a complaint and start drainage work immediately. The administration has also deployed additional staff to clean and unclog drains and stormwater channels before the onset of heavy rains.

Previous Measures and Challenges

Gurugram has faced severe waterlogging in past years, leading to traffic jams and damage to property. The city's rapid urbanization and inadequate drainage infrastructure have been major contributors. In response, the administration has also undertaken desilting of drains and construction of new stormwater drains. However, experts say that long-term solutions require integrated planning and strict enforcement of building norms.

Citizen Cooperation

The district administration has urged citizens to cooperate by not throwing garbage into drains and reporting any illegal construction that may obstruct water flow. Public awareness campaigns are being conducted through social media and local newspapers to educate residents about preventive measures.

With the monsoon season underway, the deployment of QRTs is expected to provide much-needed relief to the residents of Gurugram. The administration remains vigilant and committed to minimizing the impact of waterlogging on daily life.
