Haridwar Gears Up for Kumbh Mela 2027 with Massive Rs 500 Crore Infrastructure Overhaul

In preparation for the grand Kumbh Mela scheduled for 2027, Haridwar is witnessing a monumental infrastructure transformation. The Union government has sanctioned a substantial budget of approximately Rs 500 crore, with an additional Rs 200 crore anticipated from the state government, to develop permanent facilities that will serve not only the mega festival but also future events.

Comprehensive Development Projects Underway

Officials announced on Monday that the allocated funds will finance a series of critical projects designed to enhance crowd management, connectivity, and overall experience. The centerpiece of this initiative is the construction of a new Central Control Room (CCR) building in the Rodibelwala area. This state-of-the-art facility will feature a rooftop helipad, enabling rapid response and coordination during the massive gatherings expected at the mela.

Additional Mela Officer Dayanand Saraswati provided detailed insights into the expenditure plan:

  • Approximately Rs 500 crore is earmarked for permanent infrastructure, including the CCR tower.
  • Four major bridges are being constructed at a cost of Rs 40 crore to improve transportation across the region.
  • Nearly Rs 50 crore will be invested in developing 5.5 kilometers of riverbanks along the Ganga, enhancing accessibility and safety.
  • Other significant projects include police barracks and a dedicated Ganga museum, both set to commence shortly.

Enhanced Connectivity and Civic Amenities

Beyond these core structures, the administration is focusing on broader regional improvements. Over Rs 150 crore will be allocated for road development spanning Haridwar and Rishikesh, ensuring smoother traffic flow. A key connectivity upgrade will link Bairagi Camp, a primary holding area during the Kumbh, to Daksh Deep Kankhal, facilitating more efficient crowd management.

Separately, around Rs 200 crore is designated for upgrading drinking water facilities and further road enhancements. Sanitation works have received an allocation of about Rs 140 crore, covering the deployment of sanitation workers throughout the mela period to maintain hygiene standards.

Beautification and Revitalization Efforts

The tender process for the Har-ki-Pauri revitalization project, estimated at Rs 48 crore, has been successfully completed. This iconic site will undergo significant refurbishment to preserve its cultural and spiritual significance. Additionally, approximately Rs 70 crore will be spent on various beautification works across the Kumbh region, aiming to create a more visually appealing environment for pilgrims and tourists.

Quality Concerns and Administrative Challenges

While officials have confidently stated that most projects will be completed before the 2027 Kumbh Mela with "no compromise on quality," local residents and activists have expressed apprehensions. Social activist RM Dobhal highlighted ongoing issues, noting, "Quality has always been a major issue in Kumbh Mela works, and it remains the biggest challenge for the administration this time as well." This sentiment underscores the need for rigorous oversight and transparency in the execution of these ambitious plans.

The comprehensive infrastructure push reflects a strategic effort to not only host a successful Kumbh Mela but also leave a lasting legacy of improved urban facilities in Haridwar. As preparations accelerate, all stakeholders will be closely monitoring progress to ensure that the envisioned developments materialize effectively and sustainably.
