The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has successfully reclaimed and secured a public park spanning approximately 3,300 square yards in the Gopal Nagar area of Kukatpally mandal, located within the Medchal–Malkajgiri district. This decisive action, carried out on Friday, marks a significant victory for local residents who have long been concerned about the encroachment of green spaces in their neighborhood.
Background of the Gopal Nagar Layout
The park in question is an integral part of the Gopal Nagar residential layout, which was developed back in 1980. This expansive layout covers a total area of 92.21 acres across survey numbers 148 to 155 and comprises more than 1,200 individual plots. Originally, the layout plan included land earmarked for parks at three specific locations to provide recreational spaces for the community.
Years of Encroachment and Resident Concerns
Over the decades, two of the three designated park sites were largely encroached upon, leading to growing anxiety among residents that the remaining park might suffer a similar fate. The persistent loss of these public spaces prompted the Gopal Nagar Residents' Welfare Association (RWA) to take formal action. They lodged a detailed complaint through HYDRAA's Prajavani grievance platform, highlighting fresh encroachments that were threatening the last remaining park land.
Official Inspection and Findings
In response to the complaint, HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath ordered a thorough field-level inspection. A joint survey was conducted by HYDRAA officials in collaboration with representatives from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the revenue department. The survey conclusively confirmed that the land designated as a park was indeed under encroachment, validating the residents' concerns.
Reclamation and Securing Measures
Following the inspection, HYDRAA officials took immediate steps to reclaim the park. They removed a shed that had been illegally erected on the site, clearing the area for public use. To prevent future encroachments, the agency installed robust fencing around the entire park perimeter. Additionally, boards were put up to clearly identify the land as park property, serving as a deterrent against any further unauthorized activities.
Resident Reactions and Historical Context
Residents of Gopal Nagar have warmly welcomed HYDRAA's intervention, expressing relief and satisfaction with the outcome. Many noted that repeated representations to various government departments over the years had yielded no tangible results, making this successful reclamation a particularly significant achievement. The action not only restores a vital green space but also reinforces the importance of community-led initiatives in safeguarding public assets.
The securing of this park underscores HYDRAA's role in asset protection and disaster response, extending beyond emergency situations to address long-standing civic issues. It sets a precedent for similar efforts across Hyderabad, where encroachment on public lands remains a persistent challenge.
