IAS Officer G Sreekanth Assumes Role as Revenue Divisional Commissioner in Maharashtra
In a significant administrative move, senior IAS officer G Sreekanth officially took charge as the revenue divisional commissioner in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Friday. This appointment marks his second transfer within a remarkably short span of just 15 days, highlighting the ongoing and rapid administrative reshuffle across Maharashtra.
Transfer Details and Key Appointments
Sreekanth assumed his new responsibilities from outgoing divisional commissioner Jitendra Papalkar, a 2010-batch IAS officer who has now been appointed as joint commissioner of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Mumbai. Notably, Sreekanth had only recently been posted as mission director of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Navi Mumbai on April 3. However, within a fortnight, he was reassigned to lead the Sambhajinagar division, underscoring the fast-paced nature of these administrative changes.
Following Sreekanth's transfer, Gangatharan D, a 2013-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the new mission director of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Navi Mumbai, stepping into the role vacated by Sreekanth.
Wider Reshuffle and Political Backing
The administrative reshuffle extends beyond Sreekanth's appointment. It also includes the transfer of Jagdish Miniyar, currently serving as chief administrator (new township) at Cidco in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Miniyar, a 2015-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as commissioner of women and child development (WCD) in Pune.
Sreekanth's return to the region comes after strong backing from state ministers, including energy minister Atul Save and guardian minister Sanjay Shirsat. They had urged the chief minister to retain him in the area, arguing that his transfer could potentially hamper the progress of key drinking water projects. This political support played a crucial role in his reassignment to the Sambhajinagar division.
Background and Experience of G Sreekanth
An experienced administrator, G Sreekanth has a distinguished career in public service. He has previously served as Latur district collector and later as joint commissioner of GST in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Additionally, he held the post of municipal commissioner of the city before his recent transfers and has been actively working in the Marathwada region for the past five years.
His tenure has not been without controversy, as BJP MLA Prashant Bamb earlier raised complaints against him in the state legislature, indicating some political friction during his administrative roles.
Future Expectations and Regional Impact
With Sreekanth now heading the division, he is expected to steer administrative functioning effectively and push forward key infrastructure and water supply projects across the region. His extensive experience and familiarity with the Marathwada area are anticipated to contribute positively to the development initiatives, particularly in addressing critical water-related challenges.
This series of transfers reflects a broader strategy by the Maharashtra government to optimize administrative efficiency and align officer placements with regional needs, ensuring that experienced hands are deployed where they can make the most impact.
