Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has achieved a significant milestone by delivering India's first indigenous production-grade heavyweight torpedo. The torpedo is based on the Varunastra, an indigenously developed heavyweight underwater weapon designed by the Visakhapatnam-based Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), a laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Indigenous Defence Capability Boost
The delivery marks a major step forward in India's quest for self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The heavyweight torpedo, capable of being launched from submarines and ships, enhances the Indian Navy's underwater warfare capabilities. The Varunastra torpedo has undergone extensive trials and has been cleared for production, showcasing the technological prowess of Indian defence scientists.
Key Features of the Torpedo
- Heavyweight design for maximum impact
- Indigenously developed by NSTL, Visakhapatnam
- Production-grade quality ensured by BDL
- Enhances naval combat readiness
The successful delivery underscores the collaboration between DRDO and BDL in strengthening India's defence ecosystem. This achievement is expected to reduce dependency on foreign imports and promote indigenous innovation in underwater weapon systems.
