India Reviews LPG Security Amid West Asia Conflict, Advises States on Supply Chain Protection
In a significant move to address public concerns, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a high-level review meeting on Wednesday with all states and Union territories regarding the LPG supply situation. This meeting was convened in light of the ongoing developments in West Asia, which have raised apprehensions about potential disruptions to gas and oil supplies from key supplier countries in the region.
High-Level Attendance and Key Directives
The meeting saw participation from state and UT chief secretaries, directors general of police, and secretaries from several Union ministries, including petroleum and natural gas, information and broadcasting, and consumer affairs. The primary objective was to ensure the stability of LPG availability for household consumers across India.
Sources revealed that states and UTs were briefed on the LPG Control Order dated March 8, 2026. This directive mandates refineries and petrochemical complexes to maximize LPG production and prioritize domestic supply for households. It was clarified that restrictions on LPG distribution apply solely to commercial establishments such as hotels and restaurants, while hospitals and educational institutions are exempt from these limitations.
Security and Monitoring Measures
During the meeting, states and UTs were advised to implement several critical measures to safeguard the LPG supply chain:
- Ramp up security for LPG infrastructure and personnel to prevent any disruptions or threats.
- Monitor local LPG supplies on a daily basis to ensure consistent availability and identify any issues promptly.
- Take strict action against violators who attempt to hoard or misuse LPG supplies, thereby maintaining law and order.
Additionally, authorities were instructed to conduct sufficient awareness campaigns, both directly and through oil marketing companies, to alleviate public fears and counter rumors regarding potential LPG shortages. These efforts aim to inform citizens about the active steps being taken by the government to guarantee adequate LPG availability for households.
Combating Misinformation and Enhancing Coordination
The states and UTs were further advised to closely monitor social media platforms and take prompt action to remove fake news and false narratives about alleged LPG shortages. This includes addressing content that circulates outdated or unrelated material to create panic among the public.
To bolster these efforts, the Ministry of Home Affairs has strengthened its control room, which now operates on a 24x7 basis. This enhanced setup includes nodal officers from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The arrangement is designed to facilitate fact-checking and enable the issuance of immediate clarifications to states and UTs on any matters related to the current situation.
This proactive approach underscores the government's commitment to ensuring energy security and public confidence amidst the geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have entered their twelfth day with ongoing military actions involving Israel, Iran, and the United States.
