Indore Authorities Ramp Up Fire Safety Enforcement Drive
In a decisive move to enhance public safety, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and district administration have significantly intensified their crackdown on fire safety violations. Approximately 100 commercial buildings, specifically those of G+3 height, have been placed under direct scrutiny as part of this rigorous initiative.
Strict Deadline Set for Compliance
Officials have issued a stern final warning, giving building owners until April 8 to install mandatory fire safety equipment. Failure to comply will result in immediate sealing of premises and punitive legal actions. This deadline follows a comprehensive survey conducted by building officers and inspectors across high-footfall areas in all zones of the city.
Survey Reveals Alarming Safety Gaps
The survey, which inspected 337 buildings so far, uncovered concerning deficiencies in fire safety measures. The findings include:
- 87 buildings were found to have no fire safety equipment at all.
- 19 buildings had systems installed, but they were non-functional.
- A total of 67 notices have already been served to owners and operators failing to meet established standards.
Collector Shivam Verma emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "The 15-day notice period following our public announcement is drawing to a close. High-occupancy G+3 commercial buildings must have functional fire safety systems and conduct regular drills. We will begin strict enforcement, including sealing of premises and taking action under building bylaws, within the next two days."
No More Leniency, Warn Officials
IMC Additional Commissioner Prakhar Singh reinforced that the period of leniency is over. "We have served notices with a deadline of April 8. Those who fail to arrange the necessary fire prevention measures will face the full force of the law during the crackdown thereafter," he warned. This underscores the administration's commitment to zero tolerance for non-compliance.
Parallel Efforts: Training and Drills for Prevention
Alongside the enforcement drive, the IMC fire department and district administration are conducting large-scale drills to minimize fire risks, especially during the summer season. Recent training sessions and live demonstrations were held at prominent locations, including the collectorate and various shopping malls across the city.
These drills focus on:
- Identifying and utilizing safe evacuation routes.
- Effective use of fire extinguishers and other safety equipment.
- Maintaining composure and following protocols during emergencies.
Collector Verma highlighted that the primary objective remains "prevention first," urging citizens and business owners to prioritize safety to protect lives and property effectively.
