In response to a Times of India (TOI) news report highlighting obstructed zebra crossings at key road intersections, the Jaipur traffic police have initiated the removal of barricades that were impeding pedestrian access. This action is intended to restore safe and direct utilization of zebra crossings while maintaining smoother traffic flow at junctions.
Background of the Issue
On May 12, TOI published an article titled “Barricades block access to zebra crossings in Jaipur,” which detailed how railings installed by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) and barricades placed by traffic police to facilitate free-left turns made several zebra crossings difficult to access. Although zebra crossings and stop lines were marked to improve road safety, pedestrians often found themselves unable to reach these markings or cross safely due to the JMC railings and traffic police barricades.
Corrective Measures Taken
Now, traffic authorities are modifying these arrangements at the intersections. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic East) Mukesh Choudhary stated, “We have removed the blockade over zebra crossings, keeping a narrow space for pedestrians to move over these lines. It would have dual effects: Free left will be there, while pedestrians would be allowed to move freely. Traffic at these crossings taking left turns will be halted for a few seconds to allow pedestrian movement.”
This corrective step is expected to enhance pedestrian convenience and reinforce the intended purpose of zebra crossings in Jaipur’s busy traffic system. The move balances the need for uninterrupted vehicular movement with pedestrian safety, ensuring that zebra crossings serve their primary function of providing safe passage for pedestrians.
The traffic police have assured that similar adjustments will be made at other intersections where barricades obstruct zebra crossings. This initiative reflects a responsive approach to public concerns and a commitment to road safety.
