Jaipur Braces for Temporary Water Supply Disruption Due to Essential Maintenance
The residents of Jaipur are set to experience a significant interruption in their drinking water supply this weekend, as the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) undertakes crucial routine repair works on the vital Bisalpur–Jaipur Drinking Water Project. The scheduled maintenance is a proactive measure aimed at fortifying the city's water infrastructure ahead of the demanding summer months.
24-Hour Suspension of Pumping Operations
According to Ajay Singh Rathore, the Additional Chief Engineer (Zone II) for PHED in Jaipur, the operations at the Surajpura pumping station, which channels water to Jaipur city, will be completely suspended for approximately 24 hours. This shutdown is scheduled to commence at 8:00 PM on Saturday. While the technical suspension begins Saturday evening, the practical impact on water availability for households is expected to be felt from Sunday morning onwards.
The department has projected that efforts to restore the water supply will initiate by Monday evening, with full normalcy anticipated only after that time. This timeline underscores the extensive nature of the repair work being conducted.
Preemptive Action for Summer Preparedness
Officials have emphasized that these repairs are not merely routine but are critically essential. "These repair works are extremely essential, particularly in view of the upcoming summer season, to ensure an uninterrupted and smooth supply of drinking water in the future," stated Ajay Singh Rathore. The maintenance is a key component of the department's summer contingency plan, designed to preempt potential system failures during periods of peak demand.
An official elaborated on the strategic importance, noting, "In previous years we have seen that whenever we tried to transfer more water from Bisalpur the system developed snags. This maintenance job would ensure that we can draw the maximum quota, if required." The objective is to optimize the capacity of the pipeline to deliver Jaipur's full allocated share from the Bisalpur source throughout the intense summer heat.
Public Advisory and Appeal for Cooperation
In light of the scheduled disruption, the PHED has issued a formal appeal to the public. Residents are strongly urged to store an adequate amount of drinking water in advance to cover their needs during the affected period. The department is also requesting cooperation from citizens by advising them to utilize water judiciously and sparingly over the coming days.
This temporary inconvenience is positioned as a necessary step to secure a more reliable and robust water supply system for Jaipur, ensuring that the city is better equipped to handle the seasonal challenges ahead without significant service interruptions.
