Jaipur's Widest Road Set for Major Transformation with Safety and Aesthetic Upgrades
The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has unveiled ambitious plans for a comprehensive revamp of the six-kilometer Vande Mataram Road, nearly two years after conducting a significant eviction drive along this crucial stretch connecting Mansarovar and Prithviraj Nagar. This initiative marks a pivotal step in enhancing urban infrastructure in one of Jaipur's fastest-growing areas.
Addressing Critical Deficiencies for Enhanced Road Safety
Following an extensive recent survey, JDA officials have identified multiple deficiencies that compromise safety along this 200-foot-wide road, which is regarded as the widest in the city. Key issues include the complete absence of footpaths, missing signboards, and several accident-prone locations. The vulnerable points specifically highlighted are six circles and two major junctions: Bharat Mata, Kharbas, Vande Mataram, Hayatt, and ISKON circles.
"First, we are going to implement a proper lane system and redesign the entire stretch according to Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards, drawing inspiration from well-planned roads in Delhi and Ahmedabad," explained a senior JDA official. This approach aims to bring the corridor up to national benchmarks for urban road design.
Comprehensive Redesign Plan with Modern Infrastructure
The proposed redesign features a detailed blueprint for modern urban infrastructure. It includes constructing a 35-40 feet main carriageway flanked by 20-25 feet service roads on both sides. Additionally, the plan incorporates 8-10 feet wide footpaths, a dedicated green belt, a utility corridor, and a robust storm water drainage system to prevent flooding during monsoon seasons.
"There will be separate underground corridors for water, sewerage, electricity, telecom, gas, and streetlight lines. We also plan to create designated busways and parking slots on both sides of the road," added another official. This integrated utility management is expected to reduce future disruptions and maintenance issues.
Beautification Efforts to Enhance Urban Aesthetics
Beyond safety and functionality, the authority is developing a beautification plan to elevate the road's visual appeal. Initial proposals involve installing monuments within the six circles and enhancing junctions and dividers with extensive green plantations. These aesthetic improvements aim to transform the corridor into a more pleasant and organized urban space.
Expected Timeline and Broader Impact
Officials anticipate that the transformation will significantly alter the appearance of the road between New Sanganer Road and Muhana Mandi within the next six months. The connecting New Sanganer Road–Muhana Mandi stretch will also be redesigned as part of this broader exercise, ensuring a cohesive upgrade across the area.
"In the next six months, we are hopeful to change the look of the stretch from New Sanganer Road to Muhana Mandi. The New Sanganer Road–Muhana Mandi stretch that meets this section will also be redesigned. Given that approximately 10,000 vehicles pass through this road daily, junctions will be upgraded accordingly to handle the traffic flow efficiently," stated another JDA representative.
This project is projected to improve traffic flow, substantially reduce accident risks, and create a more organized urban corridor, contributing to Jaipur's development as a modern and safe city.
