Jamshedpur Initiates Door-to-Door Waste Collection Pilot in Bagbera Panchayat
The East Singhbhum administration in Jamshedpur is set to launch a door-to-door waste collection service as a pilot project in the Bagbera panchayat area, officials announced. This initiative aims to enhance urban sanitation and manage household waste more effectively.
Pilot Project Details and Timeline
Officials confirmed that the service will be rolled out in Bagbera and Madhya Bagbera panchayats by the first week of May. These two panchayats were selected for the initial phase of the project, which involves collecting waste directly from households.
A survey was conducted from April 10 to 13, covering 1,160 households in these areas. Jamshedpur block development officer Sumit Prakash stated, "The survey aimed to gauge resident support for daily waste collection in exchange for a monthly fee of Rs 100." The response was overwhelmingly positive, with residents endorsing the plan.
Support and Implementation
Following the survey, Potka MLA Sanjib Sardar committed to providing a refuse collection vehicle (RCV) to the block office for waste collection and disposal. This support is crucial for the operational success of the pilot project.
Bagbera panchayat samiti member Sunil Gupta emphasized, "After achieving success in these two panchayats, we plan to extend the initiative to other panchayats in a phased manner." This phased approach ensures scalability and allows for adjustments based on initial outcomes.
Demographic Context and Future Plans
Bagbera and Madhya Bagbera panchayats have a combined population exceeding 15,000, highlighting the significant impact this service could have on local hygiene and waste management. The pilot project is part of broader efforts to improve urban policies and address environmental issues in the region.
Officials are optimistic that this initiative will set a precedent for other areas in East Singhbhum and beyond, promoting sustainable waste disposal practices and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
