Chairman of Jharkhand State Hindu Dharmik Nyas Board, Jai Shankar Pathak, spoke to STOI's Vishvendu Jaipuriar about their plans and roadmap for restoration of temples and heritage conservation. Excerpts:
Q: Ichak has many beautiful and ancient temples. Why are they in such poor condition?
A: Not just Ichak, there are several such places that have been completely neglected. We are working out plans to restore those places.
Q: What is the plan to execute?
A: Nothing can be achieved without public support. We have held meetings to involve local people in this restoration drive. The work is likely to begin soon, starting with Chhota Akhada. Without public mobilisation, no project can move forward today. Recently, people of Ichak renovated the ancient Budhia Mata temple through public contribution. I want people to come forward to save such ancient structures in their areas.
Q: Any specific plan to support maintenance of these temples?
A: Most temples have valuable land parcels. We are preparing a project to develop commercial complexes on such land so that temples have a steady income stream. This will help ensure their regular maintenance. We are also working to develop and beautify other important and ancient temples of the state.
Q: How will the restoration work be carried out?
A: We will proceed only after consulting experts. The idea is to preserve their archaeological essence while restoring them.
Q: Can Ichak be developed on the lines of Maluti and turned into a major tourist hub?
A: If developed as a religious centre, Ichak can become quite popular. Another advantage is the proximity of Surajkund hot water springs in Barkattha block. If Ichak and Barkattha are developed as a circuit, it can emerge as a major tourist destination.
Q: Any other plans for Ichak?
A: We are also exploring the establishment of a Vedic school here. Discussions have been held with experts, and work is underway in that direction.
