Karnataka's Geospatial Platform K-GIS 2.0 Earns National Gold Award for E-Governance
In a significant recognition of technological innovation in governance, the Karnataka State Remote Sensing Applications Centre (KSRSAC) has announced that its upgraded K-GIS 2.0 platform has been honored with the national Gold Award for e-governance in 2024. This prestigious accolade underscores the growing importance of geospatial technology in enhancing public administration and service delivery across the state.
Director LN Rajesh Highlights Platform's Evolution and Impact
KSRSAC director LN Rajesh made the announcement during a technical workshop on GIS-based information delivery for local administration, held at the Abdul Nazir Sab Auditorium on the Zilla Panchayat office premises in Mysuru. Rajesh emphasized that KSRSAC, operating under the department of personnel and administrative reforms (e-governance), has been instrumental in numerous state and national projects since its establishment.
The journey began with K-GIS 1.0, launched in 2016, which laid the groundwork for an integrated geospatial system. Over the years, KSRSAC has developed a comprehensive ecosystem featuring over 600 GIS layers and a database encompassing nearly 20 lakh government assets. This robust infrastructure supports 41 mobile applications and 60 web-based platforms currently in use for both public services and departmental operations.
Rajesh cited specific examples of the platform's applications, including the Dishank app for property ownership verification and advanced weather-forecasting tools. He also noted that KSRSAC's efforts in geo-mapping MDA assets date back to 2009, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to leveraging technology for governance.
Officials Praise Technological Advancements and Future Potential
Additional Deputy Commissioner P Shivaraju addressed the workshop, speaking on the increasing influence of artificial intelligence in governance. He commended KSRSAC for maintaining high standards of data reliability and security, which are crucial for public trust and operational efficiency.
Chief Conservator of Forests Ravishankar highlighted the practical benefits of the Dishank app, particularly in resolving land boundary disputes, which are common in rural and urban areas. Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police C Mallik discussed how technology has enabled automated traffic enforcement and will aid in boundary identification in forest fringe areas, enhancing law enforcement and environmental management.
The workshop was attended by senior officials, including DCP KS Sundar Raj, chief planning officer Prabhuswamy, and Zilla Panchayat deputy secretary Savitha, reflecting broad institutional support for geospatial initiatives.
Expanding Role of Geospatial Technology in Public Services
The Gold Award recognition for K-GIS 2.0 marks a milestone in Karnataka's e-governance journey. It not only validates the state's efforts in digital transformation but also sets a benchmark for other regions to follow. The platform's extensive database and applications facilitate:
- Improved decision-making through real-time spatial data analysis
- Enhanced public service delivery via mobile and web interfaces
- Greater transparency and accountability in government operations
- Efficient resource management across various sectors
As geospatial technology continues to evolve, its integration with emerging fields like AI promises even more innovative solutions for governance challenges. Karnataka's success with K-GIS 2.0 serves as a model for how technology can be harnessed to create smarter, more responsive administrative systems.
