Kanpur Municipal Commissioner Takes Strict Action Against Sanitation Worker Absenteeism
In a decisive move to enforce discipline and accountability, Kanpur Municipal Commissioner Arpit Upadhyaya has ordered the immediate stoppage of salaries for 46 sanitation workers found absent during a surprise inspection. The action, which also includes a one-day salary deduction for the absent workers, was taken following an unannounced visit to Ward-61 in Tilak Nagar on Monday.
Face Recognition Machine Exposes Discrepancies in Attendance Records
During the inspection, Commissioner Upadhyaya utilized a face recognition machine installed at the post-mortem house to verify the attendance of sanitation staff. The official records revealed a stark discrepancy: only 17 workers were present against a muster roll of 63. This finding prompted a thorough investigation into the management of the sanitation department.
When questioned, the sanitary supervisor claimed that only 52 workers were deputed in the area. However, the face recognition machine's data contradicted this, showing a deployment of 63 workers. This inconsistency led to further scrutiny and subsequent disciplinary measures.
Disciplinary Actions Extend to Supervisory Staff
Commissioner Upadhyaya did not limit the crackdown to the absent workers. He ordered the stoppage of salary for sanitary supervisor Manoj, holding him accountable for the lapses in supervision. Additionally, action was taken against Zone-4 Sanitary Officer Devendra Kumar for failing to provide clear and accurate information. Kumar has been attached to the headquarters pending further review.
A show-cause notice was also issued to Nagar Health Officer Dr. Chandra Shekhar, demanding an explanation for the alleged lapses in overseeing the sanitation operations. This multi-level disciplinary approach underscores the commissioner's commitment to rooting out inefficiency at all levels of the municipal hierarchy.
Commissioner Expands Inspection to Ram Lala Temple and Traffic Congestion Areas
Following the initial inspection, Commissioner Upadhyaya extended his visit to the Ram Lala Temple premises and the route of the upcoming Ram Navami procession. He directed officials to ensure proper cleanliness, carry out necessary patchwork on roads, repair non-functional streetlights, and cover open drains near the temple to facilitate a smooth and safe procession.
During his visit to Rawatpur crossing, Upadhyaya reviewed the persistent traffic congestion situation. He instructed Zonal Officer Ravi Prakash Singh to relocate the vegetable market and streamline the fruit market near the Medical College crossing. These measures are aimed at easing traffic flow and improving overall urban mobility in the area.
This comprehensive inspection and subsequent actions highlight the Kanpur Municipal Corporation's intensified focus on improving public services, ensuring accountability among staff, and addressing urban infrastructure challenges proactively.
