Karnataka CM flags misuse of guarantee schemes, hints at relook

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Friday flagged the misuse of the state government's guarantee schemes and hinted at a possible relook at the implementation process. However, he clarified that this would not involve a revision of the schemes themselves.

CM raises concerns over misuse

Speaking at a press conference in Bengaluru, Shivakumar stated that while the guarantee schemes have been widely beneficial, there have been instances of ineligible beneficiaries availing the benefits. He emphasized the need to tighten the implementation mechanism to ensure that only the intended recipients gain from these programs.

The chief minister said, "We are committed to the welfare of the people, but we must ensure that the benefits reach the truly needy. There have been reports of misuse, and we are looking into it."

No revision, but a relook

Shivakumar was quick to clarify that the government has no plans to revise the schemes themselves. "This is not a revision. We are only looking at the implementation process to plug any loopholes," he added.

The guarantee schemes, which include free electricity, monthly financial assistance to women, and free bus travel for women, have been a flagship initiative of the state government. The CM's remarks come amid growing concerns about the fiscal burden of these schemes and reports of duplication of benefits.

Government's next steps

The state government is likely to form a committee to review the implementation and suggest measures to prevent misuse. Officials have been directed to conduct a thorough audit of beneficiaries and cross-check data with other welfare schemes.

Shivakumar also urged the public to cooperate and report any instances of misuse. "We want to ensure transparency and efficiency. The schemes are for the people, and we will not allow them to be exploited," he said.

The development has sparked a political debate, with opposition parties accusing the government of inefficiency. However, the CM remained firm, stating that the government is committed to the welfare of the people and will take all necessary steps to protect the integrity of the schemes.
