Karnataka Minister Orders Plastic Check at Kukke Temple

Mangaluru: Forest minister Eshwar Khandre has ordered the establishment of check posts at all four entry roads to the Kukke Sri Subramanya temple to inspect single-use plastics. Speaking to the media after visiting the temple on Tuesday, the minister expressed concern over the sight of plastic bottles and plates discarded along the roadside. He immediately instructed officials to set up check posts and conduct inspections in two phases.

Deemed Forests and Joint Survey

On the issue of deemed forests in the state, Khandre stated that a joint survey is being conducted with the revenue department to resolve the matter. He noted that the revenue department has been on strike for a few months, leading to a shortage of surveyors, as reported by the Udupi deputy commissioner. Special staff is being appointed for the joint forest survey, and discussions will be held with the revenue minister regarding this, he added.

Human-Wildlife Conflict Measures

Regarding human-wildlife conflict, the minister said forest officials have been instructed to take appropriate measures. Modern equipment, including drones, is being used to monitor wildlife movement, and a command center has been opened. He emphasized that thousands of devotees visit Kukke Subramanya, and to prevent wildlife attacks on them, additional traps should be set up in areas with leopard problems. He also ordered that trench work be completed to prevent elephants from entering, and solar fencing should be installed.

Khandre instructed local bodies to monitor these efforts, inspect wastewater treatment plants, and issue warnings to those discharging untreated waste into the river. If the offence is repeated, criminal cases should be filed, he added.

Responding to a query about cabinet expansion, the minister said it is at the discretion of the chief minister and declined to answer speculative questions.
