Hassan: Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar B Khandre announced on Tuesday that the state government plans to establish an elephant soft release centre spanning over 2,000 hectares. The initiative aims to reduce human-elephant conflict in the region.
Addressing Human-Elephant Conflict
Speaking to reporters at the Gendekatte Forest Guest House, Khandre noted that hundreds of elephants are straying outside forest areas in Hassan, Kodagu, and Chikkamagaluru districts. The proposed soft release centre is intended to prevent crop damage and loss of human lives caused by elephant incursions. He stated that the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) has submitted a report to the government on this matter, and a tender will be floated soon.
No Immediate Plans for Zoo in Hassan
When questioned about establishing a zoo in Hassan, the minister clarified that central government permission is required to set up a new zoo, and issues related to funding and maintenance also pose challenges. He said there is currently no such plan. The state already operates the Mysuru and Bannerghatta zoos, which are of national and international standards, along with several other zoos. Revenue generated from these two major zoos is used to cover expenses of other zoos. Therefore, the government has no proposal to establish a new zoo at this time.
Reclaiming Forest Land
The minister also highlighted steps taken to reclaim valuable land belonging to the forest department. He mentioned that 100 acres of forest land in Madenuru, near Hassan city, will be reclaimed. Chief Conservator of Forests (Hassan Circle) V Yedukondalu and Deputy Conservator of Forests Saurabh were present during the announcement.
