Kerala Minister Inaugurates Pelican Crossings in Kochi to Boost Pedestrian Safety

In a significant move to enhance road safety for pedestrians, Kerala Minister P Rajeeve officially inaugurated newly installed pelican crossings at two key locations in Kochi. The crossings, situated near the Cusat Metro station and Apollo Junction, represent a collaborative effort under the 'With Travelers' initiative led by the Lions Club.

How the Pelican Crossing System Works

The pelican crossing system is designed to empower pedestrians by allowing them to safely cross busy roads. Poles equipped with traffic signals are installed on the roadside, featuring a button that pedestrians can press. Upon activation, a red light appears, signaling oncoming vehicles to stop and creating a safe passage for walkers. This innovative approach addresses the challenges faced by pedestrians following the city's introduction of roundabouts and removal of traditional traffic signals, which had made road crossing increasingly difficult.

Expansion Plans and Future Impact

Following the successful pilot project at Aryas Junction, the implementation at Cusat and Apollo Junction marks the next phase of this safety initiative. Minister Rajeeve announced that initially, pelican crossings will be installed at 10 locations within the constituency. Subsequently, with the continued cooperation of the Lions Club, the plan is to expand this system to around a hundred centers across the region. The minister emphasized that this reform is expected to foster a new culture in the transportation sector, prioritizing pedestrian safety and convenience.

The inauguration event was attended by Lions Club officials, public representatives, and other stakeholders, who highlighted the importance of such initiatives in urban planning. By integrating technology with community-driven efforts, Kochi aims to set a precedent for other cities in improving road safety and promoting a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
