The construction of a major 500-meter-long pontoon bridge across the Kosi river near Beerbas village in Khagaria district's Gogri block is progressing rapidly on a war footing. This infrastructure project, with an estimated cost of Rs 25.13 crore, is poised to become a transformative asset for the region.
Significant Benefits for Riverine Communities
Once completed, the bridge is expected to serve as a vital lifeline for approximately one lakh residents living in at least 25 riverine villages spread across Khagaria, Madhepura, Munger, and Bhagalpur districts. The enhanced connectivity will address long-standing transportation challenges faced by these communities.
Political Support and Project Timeline
Babulal Shorya, the LJP(RV) MLA from Parbatta assembly constituency, emphasized that this project fulfills a long-cherished demand of local commuters. According to Vivek Kumar, representative of the local MLA, the bridge is likely to be opened for vehicular traffic on January 28, marking a significant milestone in regional development.
Dramatic Reduction in Travel Distances
The bridge, stretching from zero mile in Madhepura to Kapasiya ghat, will substantially shorten travel routes. Sanjiv Kumar, a Yuva Morcha activist, highlighted that it will reduce the journey between Khagaria and Madhepura by approximately 25 kilometers.
Milan Kumar, a local villager, provided concrete examples of the current travel hardships, noting that residents currently must travel about 70 kilometers to reach Alamnagar in Madhepura district. "With the completion of the bridge, this distance would be dramatically reduced to just 25 kilometers," he explained, underscoring the practical impact on daily life.
The accelerated construction efforts reflect the government's commitment to improving infrastructure in Bihar's riverine areas, potentially boosting economic activities and social connectivity across multiple districts.
