The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has officially commenced a significant transformation project for the iconic Khan Market. The civic body laid the foundation stone for a comprehensive revamp of the market's middle lane, marking a major step in its mission to upgrade urban infrastructure in the capital's premier commercial hub.
Project Details and Key Infrastructure Improvements
The ambitious project, launched on a Saturday, encompasses a wide range of upgrades designed to enhance both functionality and aesthetics. At its core is the installation of a robust new drainage system, featuring a 400-mm-diameter drainage line with gully trap chambers to manage wastewater effectively.
Simultaneously, the middle lane will receive a complete makeover with the laying of leather-finish granite stone flooring on the pavements, promising improved durability and a sophisticated look. The scope extends to crucial utility upgrades, including a new water supply line and dedicated duct and conduit pipes for electrical and other services.
Additional components of the project focus on public health and cleanliness. The existing manhole covers will be replaced, and stainless-steel dustbins will be installed throughout the area. NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Chahal, who laid the foundation stone, emphasized that the council's budget for 2026–27 prioritizes the redevelopment of prominent markets like Khan Market.
A Vision for a Global Destination
"Khan Market is a globally renowned destination, which is why NDMC took significant steps towards setting new benchmarks in cleanliness, infrastructure and urban development," Chahal stated. He revealed that the council is also working on broader improvements for the market, including enhanced parking facilities. A specific proposal involves constructing a new parking block on a plot opposite Bible Bhavan, alongside plans to create a traffic-free zone to improve the visitor experience.
These efforts build upon earlier initiatives like mechanized wet cleaning during night hours to ensure a dust-free environment for shoppers. The NDMC is now conducting regular inspections in coordination with market traders' associations to monitor the progress of the ongoing work.
Timeline, Cost, and Additional Enhancements
The middle lane revamp project has a stipulated completion period of three months and carries an estimated cost of ₹1.2 crore. Officials have scheduled its completion for April 2026.
Beyond the middle lane, Chahal announced that additional face-lifting work is underway at the entry points of Khan Market. "These works include laying M-30 grade concrete and fixing granite stone flooring to enhance durability and visual appeal," he explained. This holistic approach underscores NDMC's commitment to elevating the entire market precinct, ensuring it remains a world-class destination for both residents and tourists while addressing essential civic infrastructure needs.
