Kolkata Municipal Corporation Successfully Completes Major Water Infrastructure Maintenance
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) water supply department achieved a significant milestone on Saturday by successfully completing comprehensive repair and maintenance operations at the crucial Garden Reach water treatment plant. Simultaneously, the department conducted necessary maintenance work at several water booster pumping stations strategically located across south Kolkata.
Temporary Water Supply Suspension and Restoration Schedule
To facilitate these essential infrastructure improvements, water supply to extensive areas of south Kolkata was temporarily suspended beginning at 9 am on Saturday. A senior official from the KMC water supply department confirmed that normal water supply from the Garden Reach treatment plant is scheduled to resume at 6 am on Sunday, ensuring minimal disruption to residents.
Massive Workforce Deployment for Maintenance Operations
The scale of this maintenance initiative was substantial, with the KMC water supply department mobilizing over 200 skilled workers specifically at the Garden Reach water treatment plant to execute the repair and maintenance tasks. An additional workforce of approximately 100 workers was deployed across various booster pumping stations to address urgent maintenance requirements, demonstrating the corporation's commitment to infrastructure upkeep.
"We undertook comprehensive repair and maintenance work at the Garden Reach water treatment plant, guided by our commitment to ensure adequate water supply during the peak summer months when demand for filtered water significantly increases," explained a civic official involved in the project. "The entire operation was conducted under expert supervision and has been completed successfully. We are now fully prepared to resume water supply from Garden Reach according to the scheduled timeline starting tomorrow morning."
Areas Affected by Temporary Water Supply Suspension
According to KMC water supply department sources, the temporary suspension specifically impacted the supply of filtered water from the Garden Reach treatment plant to the entire Behala, Tollygunge, Jadavpur, and Garia regions. Additionally, water supply experienced disruptions in parts of Chetla, Kalighat, Rashbehari, Kasba, Garfa, Dhakuria Golf Green, and several areas adjacent to EM Bypass.
Comprehensive Infrastructure Improvements Beyond Basic Repairs
The maintenance initiative extended beyond basic repair work to include significant infrastructure enhancements. The KMC water supply department addressed pipeline leakages in major distribution lines and installed high-voltage motors alongside modern electrical appliances. These upgrades are specifically designed to guarantee uninterrupted water supply during the challenging peak summer period when consumption patterns intensify.
Modernization Efforts to Address Growing Water Demands
A KMC official stationed at the Garden Reach water treatment plant highlighted how these modernization and maintenance efforts will directly benefit areas experiencing increased demand for potable water, particularly within the Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt. "We have constructed multiple water reservoirs and booster pumping stations in the Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt to specifically address water scarcity issues during summer months," the official stated. "Following this successful maintenance and modernization program, we will be able to fully utilize the designed capacity of our water treatment facilities at Garden Reach, ensuring enhanced and reliable supply to meet growing demands."
According to KMC officials, the maintenance and repair work conducted at the booster pumping stations will facilitate the distribution of filtered water at consistent and uniform pressure to numerous south Kolkata neighborhoods, improving overall service quality and reliability for residents.
