Kochi Commuters Demand Urgent SPV for RoRo and Ferry Services

Regular commuters of the Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) and ferry services in Kochi have issued a pressing demand to the Kochi corporation. They are calling for immediate measures to establish a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to streamline and professionalize the operations of these vital transit systems.

Delayed Implementation of SPV

Francis Chammany, president of the Vypeen-Fort Kochi Passengers Association, highlighted a significant delay in this initiative. "State govt gave the nod for an SPV five years ago, yet the previous council failed to act," he stated. The association argues that a dedicated SPV is essential for ensuring professional management and reliable scheduling, which are currently lacking.

Infrastructure Upgrades and Route Extensions

Beyond administrative reforms, the group is demanding urgent infrastructure improvements. The current boat jetty at Vypeen is in a dilapidated condition, making it physically impossible to anchor a RoRo vessel and the Fort Queen boat simultaneously. This situation severely hampers operational efficiency and passenger safety.

Additionally, the association has proposed extending the Fort Queen's route to include Goshree Junction. By connecting Goshree, Vypeen, and Fort Kochi, the service could capture a larger commuter base. This expansion is seen as a strategic move to transition the service from a loss-making venture to a profitable one, benefiting both operators and residents.

Formal Action and Future Priorities

"We will submit a formal memorandum to the mayor in the coming days," Chammany announced. He insisted that the new council must prioritize these measures to ensure safe, smooth, and sustainable transit for the island's residents. The demands underscore a growing frustration among commuters who rely on these services for daily travel.

The call for an SPV and infrastructure upgrades reflects a broader need for enhanced public transportation management in Kochi. As urban mobility challenges increase, such initiatives could set a precedent for other cities facing similar issues with ferry and RoRo services.
