Kochi Corporation Initiates Construction of Brahmapuram Dog Shelter
In a significant move to address the issue of stray dogs, the Kochi Corporation officially commenced work on a new dog shelter at Brahmapuram on Monday. The inauguration ceremony was led by Mayor Minimol V K, with Deputy Mayor Deepak Joy presiding over the event.
Supreme Court Mandate Drives Project
The decision to establish this shelter stems directly from a Supreme Court ruling that requires local bodies to take proactive steps in removing stray dogs from public spaces. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance public safety and animal welfare in the city.
First Phase Targets 1,000 Dogs
The initial phase of the project focuses on relocating approximately 1,000 stray dogs to a dedicated one-acre site in Brahmapuram. Prior to their transfer, all dogs will undergo sterilization procedures to help control the population and promote responsible pet management.
State-of-the-Art Facilities Planned
The shelter's construction will strictly adhere to guidelines set by the Animal Welfare Board, ensuring high standards of care. Key features include:
- Observation Block: For monitoring dogs post-arrival.
- Post-Operative Block: Dedicated space for recovery after sterilization.
- Quarantine Block: To isolate sick or new arrivals.
- Disabled Ward: Specialized care for dogs with disabilities.
Additionally, a 185-square-meter area has been allocated to house up to 100 dogs comfortably. The facility will also include:
- Kitchen facilities for preparing nutritious meals.
- Storage areas for medicines and medical supplies.
- Comprehensive CCTV surveillance for security and monitoring.
Long-Term Goals and Community Involvement
The primary objective of this project is to significantly reduce the number of stray dogs on Kochi's streets, thereby improving urban hygiene and safety. An adoption center will operate alongside the shelter, encouraging residents to provide permanent homes for these animals.
At the inaugural ceremony, Health Standing Committee Chairperson Seena Gokulan welcomed the attendees, highlighting the collaborative effort. The event saw the presence of several key officials, including standing committee chairpersons Shakritha Sureshbabu, Antony Painuthara, K A Manaf, P M Naseem, and Jismi Gerald, as well as councillors M G Aristotle, Vijayakumar, Henry Austin, M X Sebastian, Jison George, Joseph Sumith, Molly Charlie, and Brijitha Ashwin. Corporation Additional Secretary Saji LS was also in attendance, underscoring the project's importance to the local administration.
This initiative marks a proactive step by the Kochi Corporation towards creating a more humane and orderly urban environment, balancing public concerns with animal welfare needs.
