Kochi Metro Intensifies Monsoon Safety Measures

Kochi: Ahead of the monsoon season, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has stepped up safety and traffic management measures across its Metro Phase II construction corridors. The initiative aims to ensure public safety, smooth vehicular movement, and uninterrupted progress of construction activities.

Enhanced Traffic Management

A major focus is on improved traffic management along the Metro alignment. To minimize inconvenience to commuters and enhance safety during heavy rains, KMRL will deploy additional traffic wardens at key locations to regulate traffic flow and assist pedestrians.

"A high-level internal committee has been constituted to continuously monitor traffic safety and coordinate necessary interventions during the monsoon. As part of these measures, additional reflectors and reflective tapes have been installed on barricades to improve visibility during night-time and low-light conditions," a Metro spokesperson said.

Barricades at several locations have been realigned to provide better driver guidance and safer traffic movement, while clear indicators and directional signage have been placed at diversion points. In completed stretches, barricades are being gradually removed to ease congestion and improve road accessibility. Additional pedestrian crossings and reduction of barricade heights in selected areas have also been carried out to enhance visibility and commuter convenience.

Construction Site Preparedness

Simultaneously, KMRL has directed all contractors to undertake comprehensive monsoon preparedness at construction sites. These measures include securing construction materials, stabilizing temporary structures, and deploying dewatering equipment in vulnerable and low-lying areas. All drains and water discharge channels under KMRL's jurisdiction are being thoroughly cleaned and cleared to prevent waterlogging and flooding.

Emergency Response Teams

To strengthen emergency preparedness, dedicated Emergency Response Teams comprising trained safety personnel and key staff are being deployed at construction sites. These teams are equipped to respond swiftly to any unforeseen incidents during the monsoon.

KMRL has also issued strict instructions prohibiting the dumping of construction materials on public roads during the monsoon season. This holistic approach aims to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of both commuters and construction workers throughout the rainy period.
