Kochi Senior Citizen Stages Solitary Protest Over Severe Drainage Crisis
In a powerful display of civic frustration, a 74-year-old resident of Kochi launched a determined protest in front of the city corporation office on Friday. The elderly man, identified as T N Prathapan, stood resolutely under the intense midday sun, demanding urgent official intervention to resolve a persistent and severe drainage and waste management problem plaguing his neighborhood.
Alleged Encroachment and Blockage of Public Drainage Canal
Prathapan, a known social activist residing in the corporation's 41st division, presented a detailed account of the issue. He alleged that an adjoining private property has illegally encroached upon and completely blocked a crucial public drainage canal. Furthermore, he claimed that the same premises is being used to rear dogs, compounding the sanitation crisis.
"Waste from the property, including significant amounts of animal excreta, is being directly discharged into the canal," stated Prathapan during his protest. "This has led to a severe and complete blockage of the drainage system."
Unhygienic Living Conditions and Flooding of Homes
The consequences of the clogged drain have been dire for local residents. Prathapan explained that during rainfall, the blocked canal causes rainwater, now mixed with the accumulated waste and sewage, to reverse its flow. This contaminated water floods back into his own home and also inundates the residence of an elderly neighboring woman.
"This situation has created utterly unhygienic and intolerable living conditions," he emphasized, describing the health hazards and daily discomfort faced by the affected households.
Months of Official Inaction Spark Public Stand
Frustration boiled over after what Prathapan described as complete official apathy. He revealed that he has been lodging formal complaints with the Kochi Corporation officials for over a month, seeking a resolution to the critical infrastructure failure. However, he alleged that no concrete or effective action has been taken by the authorities to address the grievance.
"Despite repeated pleas and written complaints, the corporation has shown negligence," he asserted, which ultimately compelled him to take his fight to the streets in a public demonstration.
Demands for Basic Amenities and Dignified Living
The elderly protestor has outlined clear and immediate demands for the civic body. He is calling for:
- The immediate reopening and clearing of the obstructed public drainage canal.
- The shutdown of the alleged dog-rearing operation on the encroaching property.
Prathapan framed his protest not merely as a local dispute, but as a fundamental fight for basic human dignity and living conditions. In an emotional appeal, he questioned, "I am protesting simply to live. If my legitimate issue is not solved, I will continue this protest indefinitely. I am 74 years old and my wife is 72. Do we not have the basic right to live in a clean and safe environment?"
