Kochi Water Crisis: Minister to Hold Emergency Meeting

Kochi Confronts Acute Drinking Water Shortage, Minister to Convene Emergency Meeting

Kochi is currently facing a severe drinking water crisis, prompting Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine to announce an urgent meeting in the city to address the escalating situation. The minister's intervention comes as multiple parts of Kochi report grave water shortages, even before the peak of summer has arrived.

Mayor and Minister Collaborate on Crisis Response

Mayor V K Minimol has confirmed that she has already held discussions with Minister Roshy Augustine regarding the pressing water issues. Following their talks, the minister has agreed to conduct a meeting in Kochi soon to develop immediate solutions and long-term strategies to mitigate the crisis.

This collaborative effort aims to bring together key stakeholders, including local authorities and Kerala Water Authority officials, to tackle the water scarcity head-on.

Councillors Highlight Widespread Water Scarcity

Several city councillors have raised alarms about the severity of the water shortage in their respective divisions. Councillor V P Chandran pointed out that the Poonithura area has been suffering from water scarcity for the past couple of months, indicating a prolonged and deepening crisis.

The situation has been exacerbated by critical infrastructure failures, including the partial collapse of the water storage tank operated by the Kerala Water Authority at Thammanam. This incident has led to acute drinking water shortages in several locations across Kochi, disrupting daily life and raising public health concerns.

Previous Promises and Ongoing Challenges

At a recent meeting jointly convened by District Collector G Priyanka and Mayor Minimol, Kerala Water Authority officials assured that the water shortage issues would be resolved within a week. However, Councillor Chandran noted that the problem persists, highlighting a gap between promises and actual implementation.

In addition to the Thammanam tank collapse, issues at the Pazhoor pumphouse have further aggravated the crisis. This pumphouse is crucial as it supplies water to the Maradu drinking water treatment plant, and its malfunctions have significantly impacted water distribution in the city.

  • The partial collapse of the KWA water storage tank at Thammanam has caused widespread shortages.
  • Problems at the Pazhoor pumphouse are disrupting water supply to the Maradu treatment plant.
  • Councillors report that water scarcity is severe even before summer peaks, suggesting underlying systemic issues.

As Kochi residents endure this challenging period, the upcoming meeting led by Minister Roshy Augustine is seen as a critical step toward finding sustainable solutions and restoring reliable water access to all affected areas.
