Kolkata Metro Revives Return Ticket Facility with Modern QR Technology

In a significant move to enhance commuter convenience, the Kolkata Metro has reintroduced the same-day return ticket facility after a hiatus of 15 years. This initiative, launched on an experimental basis by Kolkata Metro General Manager Subhransu Sekhar Mishra, marks a return to a system that was once a staple for daily travelers until its suspension in 2011.

Addressing Commuter Demands Across the Network

The return ticket system, which had been defunct since the phase-out of old magnetic strip paper tickets, is now available across the entire Kolkata Metro network. This includes the North-South corridor, the East-West line, and all newly operational stretches. While the Metro has long promoted smartcard usage, this reintroduction directly responds to persistent demands from commuters who prefer flexible, single-day travel options over maintaining smartcards or purchasing multiple tickets.

How QR Return Tickets Work to Save Time

Unlike standard plastic tokens that are restricted to single journeys, the new return tickets are issued as paper QR codes. Passengers can obtain these by requesting a 'Same-Day Return Ticket' at any Metro booking counter. The ticket covers both onward and return journeys on the same calendar date printed on it. To use it, commuters scan the QR code at Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates for entry and exit during their first trip, and then reuse the same paper ticket for the return leg.

Efficiency and Congestion Control Measures

The primary goal of this reintroduction is to reduce congestion at booking counters, especially during peak office hours. S S Kannan, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Kolkata Metro, emphasized that this facility will save passengers time by eliminating the need to queue twice for tickets. He stated, "Passengers availing this facility will not have to purchase tickets from booking counters once again when they are trying to embark on the return journey. This will help save time and enhance mobility across corridors."

Guidelines for Smooth Commuting

Metro officials have issued important guidelines to ensure the new system operates smoothly:

  • Ticket Preservation: Passengers must keep their QR-coded paper tickets secure and in good condition throughout the day to avoid scanning issues.
  • Mandatory Swiping: Even though the fare is prepaid, the ticket must be scanned at AFC gates to validate the return journey; failure to do so will result in denied entry.

This revival comes after over a decade where commuters had to rely on smartcards or stand in lines multiple times daily, highlighting the Metro's commitment to improving urban mobility and passenger experience in Kolkata.
