Kolkata's College Street to be vehicle-free for cyclists

Kolkata: A section of College Street, the famous Boi Para stretch, is set to become vehicle-free, with only bicycles allowed, according to urban development and municipal affairs minister Agnimitra Paul. Speaking on Thursday, Paul stated, "We are exploring the possibility of making a portion of the road free of vehicles, permitting only cycles. Benches and lights will be installed to allow book lovers to sit and read. Wi-Fi connectivity will also be provided for faster internet access."

The minister's department has invited designers to propose innovative road dividers featuring digital hoardings. Paul added, "The goal is to generate revenue through sustainable beautification. Revenue generation is our primary objective. We will also make trams more attractive with designated routes. Trams are an integral part of Kolkata's identity."

Local Reactions

Pratap Das, joint secretary of the College Street Boi Para Samannay Samiti, commented, "Traffic congestion is a major issue here, and the area often hosts protests and rallies. These challenges must be addressed for the plan to succeed. If implemented, it will boost business, but the old-world charm of College Street should be preserved."
