Kolkata's VIP Road Welcomes Second Biodiversity Park at Debi Ghat
Kolkata has officially unveiled its second biodiversity park along the bustling VIP Road, marking a significant enhancement to the city's green infrastructure. The newly renovated Debi Ghat, located in the Dakshindari area, was virtually inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday, transforming a previously underutilized space into a vibrant public amenity.
A Rs 5 Crore Transformation for Public Enjoyment
Developed at an approximate cost of Rs 5 crore, this project aims to provide residents with a serene environment to unwind and connect with nature. Bidhannagar MLA and Fire & Emergency Services Department Minister Sujit Bose emphasized the park's purpose, stating that it has been crafted as a biodiversity park where people can spend quality time amidst natural surroundings.
Key Features and Visitor Amenities
The park boasts a meticulously designed landscape that includes a rejuvenated waterbody adorned with decorative fountains, creating an aesthetic focal point. Surrounding the waterbody, a dedicated walkway allows visitors to enjoy leisurely strolls while taking in the scenic views. To enhance comfort and convenience, wooden benches and waste bins have been strategically placed at various points, and a toilet block has been installed within the premises.
In a nod to local cultural practices, the park features a platform decorated with traditional alpana drawings, equipped with rollers on the slope to facilitate idol immersion during festive puja occasions. Additionally, an open iron cage has been set up at the right end of the ghat for the disposal of daily household puja offerings such as flowers, with conservancy workers from the South Dum Dum municipality ensuring daily collection and proper disposal.
Operational Details and Security Measures
To manage visitor flow and maintain the park's tranquility, entry timings have been established from 5 am to 9 am and again from 3 pm to 9 pm. The greenery has been significantly enhanced through extensive tree plantation efforts, contributing to the park's biodiversity. For safety and accessibility, illuminated high mast lights have been installed, and 24-hour round-the-clock security surveillance is in place to ensure a secure environment for all visitors.
This initiative not only adds to Kolkata's green lungs but also reflects the government's commitment to urban development that prioritizes environmental sustainability and community well-being. The Debi Ghat biodiversity park stands as a testament to how urban spaces can be revitalized to offer recreational, cultural, and ecological benefits to the public.
