Waterlogging Disrupts Services at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital

Heavy rainfall in Delhi led to a flood-like situation at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, with the outpatient department (OPD) becoming waterlogged on Monday. The incident disrupted medical services and drew sharp political reactions, with opposition parties criticizing the city administration for poor drainage and infrastructure management.

Details of the Incident

The hospital, located in the Khichripur area of East Delhi, experienced significant water accumulation after continuous downpour. According to hospital staff, water entered the OPD building, forcing patients and medical personnel to wade through ankle-deep water. Several departments, including the pharmacy and emergency registration counters, were temporarily affected.

Hospital authorities confirmed that while emergency services continued, routine OPD operations were hampered for several hours. “We had to shift some patients to higher floors and use temporary measures to keep the OPD functional,” a hospital official said on condition of anonymity.

Political Reactions

The waterlogging incident quickly became a political flashpoint. Delhi BJP spokesperson said, “The ruling AAP government has failed to ensure basic infrastructure. Patients are suffering due to their negligence.” Meanwhile, AAP leaders countered, blaming the MCD for poor drainage maintenance. “The MCD, under BJP control, has not cleaned drains properly, leading to such situations,” an AAP spokesperson said.

Impact on Patients and Staff

Patients and their families faced difficulties navigating the waterlogged premises. “I came for a check-up but had to wait outside as the OPD was closed. There was no proper arrangement,” said Ramesh Kumar, a patient. Hospital staff used makeshift barriers and pumps to remove water, but the situation took several hours to normalize. The hospital serves a large population in East Delhi, and the disruption added to the woes of patients already dealing with health issues.

Broader Infrastructure Concerns

The incident highlights recurring waterlogging problems in Delhi during the monsoon season. Despite repeated promises by authorities, many areas face similar issues every year. The Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, being a key public healthcare facility, has faced drainage problems in the past as well. Local residents have demanded permanent solutions, including better drainage systems and regular maintenance.
