Lucknow's First Large-Scale Bio-CNG and Fertiliser Plant Construction Underway
The construction of Lucknow's inaugural large-scale bio-CNG and organic fertiliser plant has officially commenced near Amausi, marking a pivotal advancement in the city's waste-to-energy and clean fuel strategy. This significant development is set to transform organic waste management while bolstering sustainable energy production.
Project Details and Financial Framework
Developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC), the Rs 80-crore initiative is poised to deliver substantial economic and environmental benefits. Once operational, the civic body anticipates earning nearly Rs 1.5 crore annually through royalty payments and cow dung supply charges. Additionally, a fixed monthly payment of Rs 11 lakh from the private operator will ensure a steady revenue stream.
LMC is also projected to save approximately Rs 10 lakh each month on fuel expenses, as bio-CNG will be supplied to municipal vehicles at rates about 5% lower than prevailing market prices. This dual benefit of revenue generation and cost reduction underscores the project's financial viability.
Infrastructure and Operational Capacity
The LMC has allocated 7.5 acres of land near the shooting range in Nadarganj to a private firm for a 20-year period. The facility is designed to process up to 300 tonnes of organic waste daily, utilising a diverse range of feedstocks. According to Additional Municipal Commissioner Arvind Rao, the plant will primarily use cow dung sourced from Kanha Gaushala, which produces over 150 tonnes daily. Kitchen waste, vegetable market refuse, and agricultural residue will also be incorporated into the processing stream.
This daily waste processing capability is expected to significantly alleviate pressure on existing landfills, thereby enhancing overall city cleanliness. Civic officials have highlighted that the project will further strengthen Lucknow's performance in the Swachh Survekshan rankings, reflecting a commitment to urban sanitation and sustainability.
Timeline and Employment Prospects
Although the land was finalised in 2023 and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed earlier, the project encountered delays. Initially slated for inauguration in November 2025, the revised target for commissioning is now March 2026. Mayor Sushma Kharkwal emphasised that the project is likely to generate nearly 500 jobs, support cleaner public transport initiatives, and provide farmers with affordable organic fertiliser.
