Ludhiana Residents Protest Defacement of Public Property

Residents of Ludhiana have raised strong objections to the widespread defacement of public property across the city, with many signing a petition addressed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann demanding strict action against all violators. The petition highlights that unauthorised banners, hoardings, posters, and wall writings have cropped up on walls, electric poles, road dividers, public buildings, flyovers, heritage structures, and traffic signboards, despite the Assembly elections being several months away.

Spike in Defacement Ahead of Elections

Locals allege that the defacement has seen a noticeable increase recently, even though the elections are not imminent. A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "We believe laws must apply equally to everyone, regardless of their social, political, religious or economic status." The petition calls for immediate removal of all illegal publicity material and hefty fines on violators, with enhanced penalties for repeat offenders.

Municipal Corporation Response

Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner Ojsavi Alankar assured that authorities will take necessary action. "We are roping in non-governmental organisations and other groups to raise awareness among the masses, urging them not to deface public property. It can be done on legal and designated channels. However, if the violations continue, we will take strict action against the violators," he said.

Blame on Political Parties and Commercial Entities

Social activist Maneet Dewan attributed a major share of the blame to political parties, religious organisations, commercial establishments, coaching institutes, event organisers, and real estate promoters. Residents argue that the defacement not only mars the city's beauty and identity but also increases maintenance costs, distracts road users, and creates safety hazards. They warned that inaction sends a dangerous message that influential groups are above the law.

Key Demands of the Petition

The residents' demands include a prohibition on unauthorised posters, banners, flex boards, wall writings, and advertisements on public property; immediate removal of all illegal publicity material; hefty fines and penalties on violators; enhanced penalties for repeat offenders; recovery of removal and cleaning costs from responsible parties; public disclosure of major violators; designation of specific locations for advertisements and public notices; and strict accountability for officials who fail to enforce laws.
