Madurai Corporation has floated a tender worth approximately Rs 14.10 lakh to upgrade and modernize the dog shelter located on Dr Thangaraj Salai Road in Ward 31. The project aims to strengthen the shelter's infrastructure and improve animal care facilities significantly.
Scope of Work
Planned works include new brick masonry, reinforced cement concrete (RCC) works, and steel fabrication for roofing. The corporation also plans to install heavy-duty doors, aluminium composite panel frameworks, and interlocking paver blocks across the premises. To improve ventilation and insulation, the shelter will be fitted with ventilators, corrosion-resistant frames, and acoustical false ceiling tiles.
Plumbing and Sanitation Upgrades
The project includes upgrades to the shelter's plumbing, sanitation, and electrical systems. A separate plumbing network with a 1,000-litre water tank, stainless steel sink, and new sanitary facilities will be installed. This will ensure a reliable water supply and improved hygiene for the animals.
Electrical and Cooling Systems
The electrical system will be modernized with flame-retardant copper cabling, LED lights, and ceiling fans. Additionally, the tender provides for the installation of a split air-conditioner with an automatic voltage stabiliser, ensuring a comfortable environment for the animals and staff.
Official Statement
"The upgrades to the shelter will improve the quality of care provided to the animals and increase the number of dogs that can be accommodated at a time," a senior corporation official said. "Dogs are caught and treated every day. But they have to be held and monitored for a few days in certain cases," the official added, highlighting the need for the additional facilities at the shelter.
These enhancements are expected to significantly boost the shelter's capacity and operational efficiency, ensuring better care for stray dogs in Madurai.
