Madurai Annual Exhibition Opens Late, Sees Lower Footfall Due to School Reopening
Madurai Exhibition Opens Late, Lower Footfall Due to School Reopening

The annual government exhibition at Tamukkam Ground in Madurai has opened more than a month later than its usual schedule this year, resulting in lower visitor numbers as the summer vacation season has ended and schools have reopened.

The exhibition opened on Sunday with free entry and will officially commence on Wednesday, continuing until July 31. Around 31 government departments, including police, school education, horticulture, and animal husbandry, have set up stalls to showcase government schemes and services. Additionally, six stalls have been put up by agencies such as Madurai Corporation, Aavin, and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.

Visitors expressed enthusiasm about the amusement rides and food stalls but noted that the delayed schedule limited their ability to spend time at the venue. "It’s unfortunate that the exhibition is being held after the summer holidays and after schools have reopened," said Krishnamurthy, a visitor. "I plan to return with my family during the weekend."

According to the exhibition manager, about 6,000 people visited the venue in the first three days. "Compared to last year, the numbers are slightly lower, but we expect footfall to increase during weekends and holidays such as Muharram," he said. He explained that the exhibition is usually held in April and May but was postponed this year due to elections. "The exhibition will return to its regular schedule next year," he said, adding that organizers are planning to introduce new attractions and features in future editions.

The exhibition is open daily from 4pm to 8pm. From Wednesday, entry tickets will cost Rs 5 for students with valid identity cards, Rs 10 for children, and Rs 15 for adults.
