Madurai Corporation Rescues Three Destitutes in SMILE Scheme Drive
In a significant humanitarian effort, the Madurai corporation successfully rescued three destitute individuals who were living under the Kalavasal bridge on Sunday. This proactive drive was conducted under the comprehensive SMILE scheme, a strategic initiative aimed at rescuing and rehabilitating beggars, destitutes, and homeless people as part of broader efforts to transform Madurai into a beggar-free city.
Volunteer Efforts and Counselling Sessions
During the meticulously organized drive, a dedicated team of volunteers, including advocates and members of the Red Cross, provided on-the-spot counselling to approximately 20 people who were engaged in begging activities. These individuals were sensitively sent away from the area to discourage such practices. The three homeless individuals who were rescued were immediately taken to a SMILE Home, where they will receive comprehensive rehabilitation services.
Further actions included counselling individuals found loitering around bus stops and signal areas, with the assistance of local police, to ensure they returned safely to their homes. This multi-pronged approach underscores the city's commitment to addressing homelessness and begging through both immediate intervention and long-term support.
Insights from SMILE Home Manager
Raman, the manager of the SMILE Home, elaborated on the initiative's impact. "The 'Beggar-Free Madurai' initiative, which was launched in 2023, provides beneficiaries with essential services such as food, clothing, shelter, medical care, skill training, support for self-employment, job opportunities in the private sector, and reintegration with their families," he stated. He added that around 100 people have been successfully rehabilitated so far, highlighting the program's effectiveness in fostering sustainable change.
Infrastructure and Public Involvement
To support these efforts, shelters have been established at key locations including Uthangudi, Shenoy Nagar, Simmakkal, and Keerathurai. Each facility is equipped to accommodate up to 50 individuals, offering a safe and supportive environment for those in need. Raman emphasized the role of the public in this initiative, noting that citizens can help identify healthy beggars and destitutes and facilitate their admission into these shelters, thereby enhancing community participation in creating a beggar-free Madurai.
