Madurai Collector Reviews LPG Supply to Ensure Uninterrupted Distribution

Madurai district collector K J Praveen Kumar on Friday chaired a comprehensive review meeting with officials from major oil companies, including Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), along with distribution agents, representatives from educational institutions, and other government officials. The primary objective was to guarantee the seamless and uninterrupted distribution of LPG cylinders for both domestic and commercial purposes across the district.

Focus on Institutional Needs and Public Access

During the meeting, Praveen Kumar emphasized the critical importance of maintaining adequate gas cylinder supplies to support essential services. He specifically highlighted the need for uninterrupted functioning of breakfast and midday meal schemes in government schools, ensuring that students receive nutritious meals without disruption. Officials were directed to take proactive steps to properly utilize existing gas stock and ensure distribution to the public without any shortfall, prioritizing humanitarian grounds.

Emergency Arrangements and Alternative Measures

To mitigate potential shortages, arrangements have been made to maintain sufficient gas stock at key institutions such as the Government Rajaji Hospital. Additionally, firewood stock has been kept as an emergency alternative. Hospital hostels were instructed to use electric stoves as a backup arrangement to prevent any service interruptions. For government primary health centers and taluk government hospitals, officials were told to make advance bookings and procure gas as required to maintain operational continuity.

Precautionary Measures and Compliance

Praveen Kumar issued strict instructions against hoarding, warning that anyone found stockpiling gas cylinders would face severe action under the Essential Supplies Act. Surveillance operations are being conducted through flying squads across the district to monitor distributors and ensure they are not procuring cylinders in excess of prescribed quantities. Social justice department hostels were reported to have adequate gas stock, with alternative arrangements in place for evening snack distribution services, such as providing lemon juice and biscuits instead of tea and coffee. Privately run hostels were also advised to take necessary precautionary measures.

Public Engagement and Accountability

The collector announced that the public can report any complaints regarding gas distribution through specially designated telephone numbers, with concerned officials mandated to take immediate action. He urged all gas distributors to contact the district supply officer promptly to resolve any issues they encounter. Furthermore, oil companies were instructed to maintain a gas stock sufficient for at least three days to ensure resilience against supply chain disruptions. The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including the district revenue officer, taluk supply officers, officials from IOCL, HPCL, and BPCL, distribution agents, and various government representatives, underscoring a collaborative effort to safeguard public welfare.
