Guwahati's Maharaj Prithu Flyover to Open on March 10, Boosting Regional Connectivity
In a significant development for Assam's infrastructure, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has officially announced the inauguration of the Maharaj Prithu flyover in Guwahati. The event is scheduled for the evening of March 10, marking a major milestone in the state's urban development efforts.
Announcement Made During Live Facebook Session
CM Sarma revealed the details during a live session on his Facebook account on Saturday, addressing public inquiries about the project's timeline. He stated, "Many people have been asking me when the new Maharaj Prithu flyover would be inaugurated. I am pleased to say that it will be inaugurated on the evening of March 10." This announcement underscores the government's commitment to enhancing transportation networks in the region.
Key Details of the Maharaj Prithu Flyover Project
The flyover, stretching over 5 kilometres, connects the Ambari area to Bamunimaidam along the MRD Road. Its construction began shortly after CM Sarma laid the foundation stone on January 1, 2024, and it is expected to significantly improve connectivity between these key locations. The project is named after Maharaja Prithu, the 13th-century ruler of Kamarupa known for his military resistance against early Muslim invasions, adding a historical touch to the modern infrastructure.
Additional Infrastructure Inaugurations Planned
In a related move, Sarma added that on March 11, the Diphu and Jorhat flyovers will also be inaugurated, along with the Freedom Movement Park at Jorhat Central Jail. This series of inaugurations highlights a broader push for infrastructure development across Assam, aimed at boosting economic growth and public accessibility.
Construction Features and Investment
A Public Works Department (PWD) official emphasized that the flyover utilizes fabricated steel girders instead of conventional RCC structures. This choice was made due to their durability, ease of handling, and considerably faster installation, ensuring a robust and efficient build. The project was constructed at an estimated cost of over Rs 800 crore, reflecting a substantial investment in the state's infrastructure and connectivity, which is poised to benefit residents and businesses alike.
Impact on Guwahati's Urban Landscape
Once completed, the Maharaj Prithu flyover is set to transform traffic flow in Guwahati, reducing congestion and travel times between Ambari and Bamunimaidam. This development aligns with ongoing efforts to modernize Assam's transportation systems, supporting regional growth and improving quality of life for citizens.
