Maharashtra forms panel to curb illegal bus fare hikes

Mumbai: Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik on Wednesday announced that the state government is taking serious action against illegal fare hikes by private passenger bus operators and the financial exploitation of passengers through unauthorized mobile apps. During a meeting held at the Mantralaya, he issued directives to form a special committee to resolve complaints and suggest long-term measures.

Committee to address passenger grievances

Sarnaik stated that the committee will submit a detailed report on controlling fare hikes of private buses, curbing illegal booking apps, and recommending effective measures for passenger complaints. He confirmed that the next meeting would be organized after receiving the committee's report. He also assured that the measures suggested by the committee would be implemented effectively and promptly by the state government.

Crackdown on unauthorized apps and exorbitant fares

The minister noted that complaints have been received about many private travel companies booking passengers through unauthorized apps, especially during festivals or holidays, when exorbitant ticket rates are charged. He emphasized that strict action must be taken against such bus operators who financially exploit passengers. He warned that the looting of passengers would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Improving bus station facilities and cleanliness

Sarnaik also highlighted the need to improve the contact system at bus stations across the state. He directed that contact numbers be made available at every bus station for passenger convenience. Additionally, he instructed the Transport Department to issue a circular regarding villages whose names have been changed and ensure the use of grammatically accurate Marathi language, with strict implementation.

Addressing frequent complaints about uncleanliness of ST buses and bus stations, the minister said concrete steps are being taken to transform bus stations and maintain permanent cleanliness. He announced that toilets at all bus stations of the corporation will be made free from June 1, emphasizing that providing quality facilities to passengers is the responsibility of the administration.
