Maharashtra Government Launches Expert Task Force to Address Digital Addiction Crisis Among Children
In a significant move to combat the escalating issue of digital addiction among young people, the Maharashtra government has announced the formation of a specialized expert task force. State IT Minister Ashish Shelar revealed this decision during a session in the legislative council on Wednesday, highlighting growing concerns over the adverse effects of excessive screen time and digital engagement on children's well-being.
Comprehensive Study and Legislative Involvement
The newly constituted task force will include members from both Houses of the state legislature, ensuring a broad-based and inclusive approach to the problem. According to Minister Shelar, the primary objective of this body is to conduct an in-depth study into the prevalence and impact of digital addiction across Maharashtra. The task force is mandated to submit its detailed findings and recommendations before the commencement of the next legislative session, setting a clear timeline for actionable outcomes.
Alarming Rise in Gaming Addiction
Shelar emphasized the urgency of this initiative by citing recent studies that indicate a significant and worrying increase in gaming addiction among children in both urban and rural areas of Maharashtra. This trend underscores the pervasive nature of digital dependency, which extends beyond metropolitan centers to affect younger populations statewide. The minister pointed out that such addiction can lead to various negative consequences, including impaired academic performance, social isolation, and mental health issues.
Proactive Measures and Future Recommendations
The expert task force will be responsible for evaluating current trends, identifying root causes, and proposing effective measures to mitigate digital addiction. Potential recommendations may include awareness campaigns, parental guidance programs, regulatory frameworks for digital content, and support systems for affected families. By taking this proactive step, the Maharashtra government aims to foster a healthier digital environment for children, aligning with broader public health and educational goals.
This initiative reflects a growing recognition of digital addiction as a critical societal challenge, prompting governmental intervention to safeguard the younger generation's future.
