Mandya DC Sets March 30 Deadline for Lake Clearance

Mandya Deputy Commissioner Issues Stern Directive on Lake Encroachments

In a decisive move to safeguard vital water resources, Mandya Deputy Commissioner Kumara has issued a stringent directive to district officials, demanding the expedited removal of all lake encroachments and the implementation of long-term protection measures for reclaimed waterbodies. The directive came during a comprehensive review meeting held at the DC's office on Monday, where the progress of ongoing clearance operations was rigorously assessed.

Strict Deadline and Accountability Measures

Stressing the urgent need for greater diligence and accountability, DC Kumara set an uncompromising deadline of March 30 for the complete clearance of all remaining encroachments. He issued a clear warning that disciplinary action would be taken against any officials who fail to act within this stipulated timeline. Furthermore, he emphasized that legal action would be pursued against those involved in the illegal occupation of lake lands, underscoring a zero-tolerance approach to such violations.

Progress Report and Remaining Challenges

Officials presented a detailed progress report during the meeting, revealing that encroachments have so far been successfully cleared from approximately 245 lakes across the district. However, a significant challenge remains, with 203 lakes still under illegal occupation. The DC directed all concerned departments to immediately intensify their efforts to clear these remaining encroachments and to submit a comprehensive, detailed report without any delay.

Preventing Re-encroachment and Ensuring Long-Term Protection

Moving beyond mere clearance, DC Kumara placed strong emphasis on preventing future re-encroachment. He issued specific instructions for the implementation of robust protective measures. Officials were directed to:

  • Excavate protective trenches along the boundaries of all cleared lakes.
  • Install clear, visible signboards to demarcate and identify lake areas officially.

He assigned clear responsibility for the ongoing preservation of these waterbodies to key departments, including the Panchayat Raj Engineering Division, Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited, and the Minor Irrigation Department. These bodies are now mandated to take full ownership of lakes under their respective jurisdictions and to conduct regular, systematic inspections to ensure their continued protection and health.

The meeting concluded with a reinforced commitment from district administration to not only reclaim these crucial natural resources but also to establish a sustainable framework for their perpetual safeguarding, marking a critical step in environmental conservation and water security for the region.
