In a major drive to clear pending traffic violation cases, the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate has resolved over 35,000 cases and collected Rs 92.43 lakh in fines under a special rebate scheme. The police also seized driving licences (DLs) of offenders and forwarded recommendations to the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) for suspension of those licences.
Massive Clearance of Pending Cases
The initiative, which ran for a limited period, offered a 50% rebate on the original fine amount for early payment. This led to a surge in voluntary compliance, with thousands of motorists coming forward to settle their dues. According to police officials, the move was aimed at reducing the backlog of cases that had accumulated over several years.
A senior officer from the Mangaluru traffic police stated, "The rebate scheme was a huge success. We were able to clear more than 35,000 cases in a short span, which otherwise would have taken months or even years to resolve through courts."
Driving Licence Suspension Enforced
As part of the enforcement, police seized the driving licences of habitual offenders and those with multiple pending challans. Recommendations for suspension have been sent to the respective RTOs. The officer added, "We are taking strict action against repeat offenders. Licence suspension is a strong deterrent against reckless driving."
The traffic police have also intensified checking at major junctions and highways to catch violators in real time. Meanwhile, the public has welcomed the rebate scheme but urged for more awareness campaigns to prevent future violations.
