Mangaluru DC Addresses Civic Issues in Phone-In Programme
Mangaluru DC Hears Civic Grievances in Phone-In

Mangaluru: Deputy Commissioner and administrator of Mangaluru City Corporation Darshan HV addressed a wide range of civic issues during a phone-in programme held on Friday. Approximately 35 callers raised concerns about pedestrian safety, irregular water supply, desilting of drains, incomplete infrastructure works, and waste management lapses.

Footpath Encroachments and Auto Fare Complaints

Pradeep Kumar from Attavara highlighted that the footpath from Mangaluru Railway Station towards Attavara has been overtaken by parked vehicles, forcing pedestrians onto the road. He also alleged that autorickshaw drivers charge excessive fares for short distances of 1.5 km.

Water Supply and Billing Issues

Water-related grievances were prominent. Praveen Kumar from Bangrakulur reported not receiving a water bill for over a year, despite his willingness to pay. The DC directed officials to investigate immediately. Another caller mentioned that despite obtaining a water connection four months ago, supply had not yet reached his home.

Sanitation and Drainage Concerns

Sanitation and drainage issues were repeatedly raised. Ignatius D'Souza from Pumpwell alleged that gray water is being discharged into stormwater drains. Ramesh reported that wastewater is flowing into Baggundi lake, polluting the water body, and urged the administration to develop the lake into a tourism spot.

Chandrakanth from Subhashnagar stated that overflow of 'rajakaluve' during the monsoon causes flooding inside his home. The DC instructed engineers to inspect the site and undertake desilting work immediately.

Encroachments and Traffic Disruptions

Encroachments and traffic disruptions were another major concern. Ramachandra from Ekkur complained about roadside vendors and parked vehicles blocking roads in the evenings. Felix from Vamanjoor said the ongoing highway work lacks proper pedestrian crossing facilities.

Administrative and Documentation Issues

Residents also raised administrative and documentation issues. A caller from Surathkal alleged duplication of site numbers in Krishnapura. The DC directed her to submit details to the Surathkal zonal office and asked officials to verify whether two khatas had been issued for the same property.

Safety Hazards and Traffic Congestion

Motorists flagged safety hazards due to faded speed breakers. The DC responded that all humps would be repainted within 15 days. Traffic congestion at Urwa Store Junction was also brought to light, and Darshan said he would take up the matter with the traffic police.

One caller raised an issue with the underground drainage system, while another demanded relocation of the private bus stand to Pumpwell and installation of zebra crossings on key roads including Marakada, Jyothinagar, and Kavoor.
