Mangaluru's New Road Inaugurated Amid Waterlogging Concerns
Mangaluru's urban development and town planning minister Byrathi Suresh inaugurated a crucial road connecting the city from NH-66 at Jappinamogaru via the Mahakalipadpu railway underbridge (RuB) on January 25. However, significant concerns about potential waterlogging under the RuB during the upcoming monsoon season have emerged, casting a shadow over the project's completion.
Smart City Authority Takes Immediate Action
Following the inauguration, the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) swiftly initiated work to address the waterlogging risks on the new city approach road stretch. The road was opened before the necessary infrastructure for proper water drainage was fully developed, prompting urgent remedial measures.
MSCL general manager (technical) Arun Prabha KS revealed to TOI that a comprehensive plan has been prepared to prevent flooding under the RuB. "The plan includes constructing stormwater drains from both directions of the RuB and installing a gully trap to facilitate free water flow," he explained. Gully trap chambers will be positioned on both sides of the road, allowing water to be channeled safely to the river.
Lessons from Past Flooding Incidents
A similar waterlogging problem has plagued the RuB at Padil near the Mangaluru junction railway station. During heavy rainfall, this underbridge frequently floods due to inadequate stormwater drainage systems, leading to vehicles becoming stranded in the submerged passage.
Arun Prabha emphasized that the work at Mahakalipadpu will be completed before the monsoon arrives to ensure that major approach roads do not experience artificial flooding. Regarding the absence of underground drainage in the area, he assured that it will not affect the new road and the 4-lane twin RuB, which was developed at a cost of Rs 50 crore.
Proactive Measures for Monsoon Preparedness
The authorities are taking a proactive stance to avoid repeating past mistakes. The installation of stormwater drains and gully traps is critical to managing rainwater effectively and preventing disruptions to traffic and safety hazards.
This situation highlights the importance of integrating drainage infrastructure with road development projects from the outset. The MSCL's rapid response aims to mitigate risks and ensure the new road serves its purpose without seasonal flooding issues.
