The municipal corporation (MC) of Yamunanagar and Jagadhri has launched a comprehensive drain cleaning drive ahead of the monsoon season. The initiative aims to prevent waterlogging and ensure efficient drainage in the twin cities.
Scope of the Drive
The cleaning operation covers major drains and water channels across both cities. MC officials have deployed multiple teams to clear silt, debris, and garbage from drainage systems. The drive is expected to be completed before the onset of heavy rains.
Key Measures
- Mechanical and manual cleaning of all major drains.
- Removal of encroachments obstructing water flow.
- Desilting of culverts and stormwater drains.
- Regular monitoring by MC supervisors.
Residents have been urged to refrain from dumping waste into drains to support the efforts. The MC has also set up a helpline for reporting waterlogging issues.
Past Challenges
In previous years, inadequate drainage led to severe waterlogging in low-lying areas, causing inconvenience to commuters and residents. This year, the MC aims to address these problems proactively.
The drive is part of a larger pre-monsoon preparedness plan that includes repairing damaged roads and ensuring the functionality of pumping stations. The MC has allocated additional funds for the maintenance of drainage infrastructure.
