MCD Denies Unauthorized Dumping, Details Okhla Landfill Waste Transport Process
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) issued a formal statement on Friday, addressing recent reports and clarifying the nature of waste being transported from the Okhla landfill site. The corporation emphasized that only scientifically processed material is being moved and dumped at an authorized location near the NTPC Badarpur Eco Park.
Response to Media Reports on Untreated Garbage
In response to a TOI report alleging that untreated garbage was being dumped near Madanpur Khadar Extension, MCD refuted these claims. The corporation explained that the material being transported from the Okhla dumpsite consists of inert material and construction and demolition waste. This waste is generated through biomining and bioremediation processes applied to legacy waste at the landfill, ensuring it meets environmental standards.
During a visit earlier this week, TOI observed polyethene bags, pieces of glass and cloth, and construction debris in mounds at the dumpsite, which is located close to a JJ Colony in Madanpur Khadar Extension. However, MCD's statement countered this by asserting that only processed waste is being handled in a regulated manner.
Details on the Authorized Dumping Site and Permissions
MCD provided specific details about the designated site for dumping the processed waste. The site spans over 42 acres and is being used for filling low-lying land. According to the corporation, this land belongs to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Land & Development Office, with all necessary permissions obtained for the operation.
Furthermore, MCD clarified that the dumpsite does not fall within floodplains, addressing potential environmental concerns. The statement reiterated the established norms for bioremediation of waste at landfill sites, which were referenced in the TOI report.
Biomining Process and Environmental Compliance
The corporation outlined the biomining process involved in waste segregation. This process separates waste into categories such as refuse-derived fuel (RDF), construction and demolition material, and inert fractions suitable for landfilling. MCD stressed that this is done in compliance with environmental norms and directives from the National Green Tribunal, ensuring minimal ecological impact.
Deadlines for Clearing Major Landfill Sites in Delhi
MCD also announced deadlines for clearing major landfill sites in the city. The Okhla dumpsite is targeted for clearance by July 2026, while the Bhalswa site is set for December 2026, and the Ghazipur site for December 2027. These timelines reflect the corporation's ongoing efforts to manage waste more effectively and reduce landfill burdens in Delhi.
This clarification from MCD aims to reassure the public and stakeholders about the regulated and environmentally compliant handling of waste from the Okhla landfill, amidst concerns raised by recent media reports.
