MCD Tax Collection Jumps 45% with Amnesty Scheme

New Delhi's Municipal Corporation has recorded a substantial rise in property tax revenue. The civic body collected 45% more tax by December 31, 2025, compared to the same period last year.

Record Revenue Growth

Total collections reached Rs 2,700 crore in the last financial year. This marks a significant increase from the Rs 1,859.7 crore collected during the corresponding period in 2024.

More Taxpayers Join the System

The number of property taxpayers also grew considerably. Officials reported a 21% increase in taxpayers, with the count rising from 10,31,177 in 2024 to 12,43,375 last year.

Amnesty Scheme Drives Compliance

Authorities credit the Sumpattikar Niptaan Yojana (SUNIYO) 2025-26 for this impressive performance. This property tax amnesty scheme offered waivers on interest and penalties to encourage payment.

Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh explained the scheme's impact. "The initiative motivated taxpayers who had paid only once or twice to clear their outstanding liabilities," he stated.

Correcting Past Returns

An official noted that many taxpayers came forward to regularize their dues under the scheme. These individuals had previously filed incorrect property tax returns and paid lower amounts.

Approximately 1.7 lakh taxpayers utilized the amnesty scheme. Their participation contributed Rs 933 crore to the municipal corporation's revenue.

The SUNIYO scheme clearly boosted both compliance and collections for Delhi's civic administration.
