MCG Collaborates with Safetipin to Enhance Public Space Safety in Gurgaon
The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Safetipin India Foundation to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of public spaces across the city. This initiative aims to systematically assess the safety and accessibility of key urban areas, with a focus on improving conditions for all residents, particularly women and vulnerable groups.
Detailed Survey of Public Infrastructure
Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Tuesday, Safetipin will undertake an extensive survey of critical public locations throughout Gurgaon. The assessment will target bus stops, metro stations, public toilets, and other high-traffic areas, evaluating them based on multiple parameters. These include lighting quality, overall accessibility, cleanliness standards, and the availability of essential infrastructure.
The survey project is scheduled to commence next week and will span a period of three months. During this time, approximately 500 kilometers of major roads and selected public spaces will be meticulously examined. This thorough coverage ensures a holistic understanding of the city's urban safety landscape.
Advanced Digital Data Collection Methods
Safetipin will leverage its sophisticated digital platforms to gather precise, geo-tagged data on urban safety indicators. The My Safetipin App and Safetipin Nite tools will be utilized to collect information on critical factors such as lighting intensity, visibility levels, openness of spaces, presence of people, walkability, security measures, and access to public transport networks.
In addition to technical assessments, the organization will document the personal experiences of women and girls who regularly use public spaces and transportation systems. This qualitative data will help identify specific gaps and challenges that may not be apparent through quantitative measurements alone.
Municipal Support and Implementation Framework
MCG will play a crucial supporting role in this collaborative effort. The civic body will identify priority locations for assessment, facilitate necessary approvals for data collection activities, and provide spatial datasets related to existing public infrastructure. Furthermore, MCG will coordinate with relevant municipal departments to ensure effective implementation of recommendations that emerge from the comprehensive assessment.

Commissioner Dahiya emphasized the practical utility of the survey findings, stating, "The comprehensive assessment will help identify specific gaps in our public infrastructure and guide targeted corrective measures to enhance urban livability."
Kalpana Viswanath elaborated on the study's methodology, noting that it will evaluate conditions related to lighting, mobility patterns, and overall safety before submitting detailed recommendations to the civic authorities.
