Meghalaya Issues Safety Advisories for Tourists After Teen Death

The Meghalaya government has issued a series of safety advisories for tourists and operators in the East Khasi Hills district. This action comes amid an increase in visitors to the banks of rivers swollen by pre-monsoon showers and various adventure spots, which often lead to fatal disasters.

Background of the Advisory

The advisory, issued by the office of the deputy commissioner and the District Disaster Management Authority, follows the death of a teenage tourist girl from Uttar Pradesh. She was swept away by strong currents near Weisawdong Falls in Sohra (Cherrapunjee) after reportedly slipping while taking a photograph while standing precariously on the waterfall edge.

Mandatory Requirements for Tourist Spots

The tourism department has made it mandatory to display site maps at tourist spots, clearly indicating entry and exit points. The advisory states, “Tourist guides/persons who are working in tourist spots should be trained in basic life saving skills.”

Infrastructure and Equipment Checks

Damaged infrastructure must be rectified immediately. At locations with boating facilities, safety equipment and engines should be visually inspected before use, and only experienced boat handlers should be allowed to hire boats.

Swimming and Weather Monitoring

Tourist spots that allow swimming must have a lifeguard present. Regular checking of weather forecasts from the IMD website is required. The advisory warns, “Watch the waters at all times as conditions can change dramatically in a short time.” It also advises, “Don’t drink alcohol and never fish alone.”

Emergency Preparedness

Operators must keep first aid boxes, fire extinguishers, and emergency lights available. Emergency contact numbers (112/108) should be displayed for public information.
